New Year’s Day Detox: From Breath to Body to Bliss
Teacher: Jeffrey Shoaf
Jan. 1, 2 – 4 pm. Main Street Studio
Modern life encourages us to alway look outside ourselves for happiness. Yoga teaches us that happiness can only be found within. The practice of pranayama offers us the opportunity to touch that part of ourselves that is our true nature; that part of us that has always been there, but one we rarely ever spend time getting to know.
Prana translates as life-force. Pranayama is concentrated mindful awareness of, and control of, our breath, which governs that force.
In this practice, we will focus our attention on regulating the flow of breath in a systematic and intelligent progression. We then have the opportunity to go deeper inside, to experience true stillness in the mind, and, as a result, the true stillness within ourselves. These techniques will set the stage for a practice of deeply held postures, and a blissfully meditative conclusion.
Share with us in the teachings of our Kripalu and Pranakriya based traditions, as was taught by our master teacher Yoganand Michael Carroll, in early December of this past year.
***(A prior and steady practice of at least 6 months of yoga under the guidance of an experienced teacher is recommended).
Class size is limited to 15.
Yin Yoga and Guided Yoga Nidra
Yin Yoga is a method of doing postures that is quiet, meditative and slow. Each posture is designed to stimulate and open the energy meridians that circulate through every cell of the body. Blocked meridians starve tissues and lead to tension, pain and injury. Yin yoga produces moisture and increases flexibility and durability. It reverses the aging process and induces a state of meditation. It is very effective in preparing one for Yoga Nidra and other deep states of meditation.
Yoga Nidra is a powerful relaxation technique and it is one of the most important practices of in yoga.
Yoga Nidra means “Sleep of the Yogi”. It is a state between waking and sleeping, that is also known as Conscious Sleep. Historically, practitioners of yoga have used this practice to restore their body and mind on deep levels. Yoga Nidra also works to undo the Samskaras, the deep “scars” or patterns in our karmic bodies. As we practice relaxing on this profoundly deep level, addictive patterns become weaker. We are freer to move in directions that used to seem closed. Yoga Nidra is done in the pose of Savasana, or Corpse Pose, lying on one’s back with pillows and blankets for support.
Open to all. No experience necessary. Class size limited to 15 people.

Many ancient yoga texts give pranayama as the next level of practice after asana. In the Tantric Hatha Yoga traditions pranayama is used as a powerful tool to deepen asana practice as well as meditation practice. Pranayama generates internal sensitivity on both the physical and mental levels. It also raises our over all energy (prana) level allowing an increase in alertness that can manifest as profound focus and insight. Join us for an exploration of this deep practice. Experience pranayama as a way to connect with energy and learn how to channel that energy into a life of greater spiritual attunement. (This program is for practitioners with at least 6 months practice.)
