This 2 1/2 hour workshop will introduce students to the practice of Ashtanga Yoga. Ashtanga, which in Sanskrit means 8 Limbs, or 8 Aspects of yoga practice, is an in-depth system of yoga asana and coordinated breathing, developed by Sri K.Patthabi Jois in Mysore, India. Ashtanga Yoga is now practiced all over the world. The practice of Ashtanga, which connects a set series of poses through rejuvenating vinyasa flow, is designed to develop focus and the deepen internal experience in the practitioner.

We will briefly discuss each of the 8 aspects of the practice, and begin to learn the poses of the first half of the Primary Series, working through Standing and Seated postures to develop flexibility and strength, always using our connection to our breath to create stability as we move. Exploring Ashtanga’s mind-body-breath connection, we will find grace and joy in the flowing postures, beginning to move with ease between poses.

For beginning students, this workshop can also serve as a short introduction to the practice of yoga in general. Students will be introduced to basic concepts behind yoga philosophy and learn fundamental breathing, bandha and asana practices. We will move slowly and there will be time for questions.

Guided Ashtanga Practice: Integrating Limbs and Movement
Sunday, November 16, 9 am - 11am, Phoenix Studio $20

For those who have taken Saturday’s workshop and would like an opportunity to practice what they have learned in the traditional continuous flow of poses, or just for those who are curious about Ashtanga practice, this guided class will begin with breathing techniques, move through the first half of Ashtanga’s Primary Series, and end with a gentle Yoga Nidra, also know as Perfect Sleep, a guided meditation that will bring us into a deeper awareness of our own personal intentions. Come and explore a longer practice! $20
